French toast fresh future: 50th anniversary of Quebec conference

The Quebec conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches (AEFMQ) celebrates their 50th anniversary this year. A weekend of remembrance and worship will take place June 10-12 (for more details, see www.aefmq.org), but first, the conference met in April for their annual convention.
“Staying on TRAC (trajectory, replenishment, awareness, choices)” was the theme for the March 18–19 gathering of Alberta MB congregational representatives at Sunrise Community Church, Edmonton. Yet the theme might have very well been “A new normal.”
As is typical of most family get-togethers, the 80th convention of the Ontario Conference of MB Churches called attendees to “Remember, Reflect and Renew.” And like most family gatherings, the Feb. 18–19, 2011 meeting of leaders and 156 delegates at Waterloo MB Church included encouraging celebrations and tough conversations.
Two churches – who meet at a unique, shared site – hosted this year’s annual convention of the B.C. Conference of MB (BCMB) Churches. Richmond Bethel and Richmond Chinese MB’s co-host pastors told delegates that each church has its normal congregational life in the same building, but they do some things jointly or cooperatively. Pastors Peter Mau and Scott Tolhurst said those joint things must be intentional – they don’t “just happen.”
The annual convention of the Quebec MB conference (l’Association des églises des frères mennonites du Québec – AEFMQ) was held Apr. 10 in Laval at Église chrétienne de Ste-Rose.
After last year’s intense business sessions, the MB Church of Manitoba (MBCM) gave Assembly 2010 delegates a chance to attend equipping workshops and ask God to speak to them about the future. The province’s annual convention, held March 5–6 at Portage Avenue Church in Winnipeg, drew in some 230 delegates, and focused heavily on church planting and compassion ministries.
Ontario church plants have found their way to the big city, and are discovering innovative ways of being salt and light among their neighbours – and they want to encourage established churches to do the same. Hosted by the Ontario board of church extension (BOCE), Feb. 19–20, the 79th annual convention of the Ontario Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches challenged some 140 participants, and attempted to build bridges between the province’s old and new ministries.
The Quebec MB conference, Association des Églises des Frères Mennonites du Québec, met for their annual convention April 4 at Église Saint-Jérôme in Montreal. Close to 50 delegates, ministry workers, and special guests assembled to worship together and hear reports on conference ministries. Following a word of welcome and a time of worship, Daniel Genest, pastor of the host church, gave a meditation on Hebrews 11:35–40.
The agenda was full – with reports, workshops, worship, and three sermons – and so it clipped along, with next to no discussion from the floor. For all its efficiency, however, the 78th convention of the Ontario Conference of MB Churches, held at Port Rowan MB Church Feb. 20–21, 2009, had a strong spirit of interactive engagement about it. Calls of “Amen” and “That’s right” were occasionally heard from the delegation of 155 and, from the podium, the news this year seemed mostly good.
