The faith of the young girl spoke volumes.
In the suburb of Chilca, churches from Huancayo, Peru, gathered together for a national Disciple Making International (DMI) campaign under the leadership of Napoleon Guerrero Laoyza. (DMI is a short-term program of MBMSI that partners participants with Christians in a host country for a two-week campaign to bring the gospel into a neighbourhood though door-to-door evangelism.)
Eduardo Silupu and Graciela Cordova were accompanied by three teammates from New Life Church for a day of community evangelism. As they passed by a house, they heard a 12-year-old girl call out to them. She was persistent and begged them to come inside her home.
Uncertain of what they might find, they entered the house with tentative steps. But all hesitancy dissolved when they saw a woman lying on her bed. She was blind, having lost her vision to an eye sickness. Her daughter, who called out for their help, had been taking care of the household.
The team gathered around the woman’s bedside and offered up prayers of faith to the God who heals. They asked the Lord to restore her vision completely – and he did.
“I can see!” proclaimed the woman. She and her daughter were overwhelmed and rejoiced together in what the Lord had done. Their spiritual blindness also fell away, and both mother and daughter prayed to receive Jesus Christ as Saviour of their hearts.
This young girl’s faith is similar to another woman’s: suffering from a discharge of blood for many years, she saw numerous physicians but only grew worse. Her story is found in Mark 5: “When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, ‘If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed’”(27-28).
When the little girl called out to the DMI group passing by, she believed they could help her mother. She too must have heard about Jesus and known that the group of missionaries could do something more. She believed that if they would come to her, God could heal her mother.
The Bible story continues. After touching Jesus’ garments, he told her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
The fragile, frightened 12-year-old girl from Peru called out to a God she did not know with a faith that many do not have.
May we also be encouraged to share that same faith!
