Seminary president witnesses a miracle – with a little help from some friends
It was a moment he’ll never forget. On Mar. 13, surrounded by polished marble, regal red carpet, and somber politicians, Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary Canada president Bruce Guenther looked down from the gallery in the B.C. provincial legislature and witnessed a miracle.
My brother and I wander through the bustling old market. It’s a struggle to wend our way through hordes of people, motorcycles, and cars. The aromas of fish, spices, perfumes, fresh fruit, and diesel exhaust combine to create a smell as strange to our Western sensibilities as the shawarmas in our stomachs. Shopkeepers shout out their wares, each trying to outdo the next.

“Try it, you’ll like it!” In a consumer age, a version of this old advertising line calls spiritual seekers to read the Bible. Taste and See invites readers to engage with the Bible and be introduced to God, “whom the Bible is all about.”A newly formed Office of Religious Freedom will defend those persecuted for their faith around the world, but closer to home many Canadians seem indifferent or even hostile to the idea. You’d think that dedicating Canadian resources to protecting freedom of conscience and religion internationally would be something most citizens could get behind.
Pioneer evangelist and pastor to Indo-Canadians in B.C.’s Fraser Valley, David Manuel was honoured at Celebration 2010 for ministering to more than a generation of Punjabi settlers in the Valley. Some three decades after Manuel started his work out of South Abbotsford (B.C.) MB Church, a number of congregations in the central valley have embarked on an effort to reach out to the growing community of more than 30,000 Punjabi people, most followers of the Sikh religion.
The Honourable Julian Fantino, Canada’s Minister for International Cooperation, recently recognized MEDA’s sustainable approach to economic development in Ethiopia. During his visit, Minister Fantino met with weavers involved in the EDGET program Ethiopians Driving Growth through Entrepreneurship and Trade. The project receives funding from the Government of Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency, and is aimed at helping 10,000 farmers and weavers to create more sustainable livelihoods for their families.
