In late September, a six-alarm fire broke out in one of the 18 high-rise buildings in St. Jamestown, a densely populated community in the heart of downtown Toronto. The blaze left 1,500 people homeless – many of them new immigrants and refugees to Canada.
What would become of the stone? I wondered. Did its bedside home trigger reminders to taunt her grief? Did it still reside in her collection of wonder?
I first noticed her among the many who were eagerly awaiting a hot meal. As I scrambled to ready another plate on the breakfast assembly line, I happened to glance up. Her eyes met mine and we exchanged a brief smile amidst the morning rush.
