Choirs proclaim the majesty of unity

Close to 400 people celebrated Christmas with carol singing and “The Majesty of Heaven” cantata, performed by a joint choir and orchestra, followed by refreshments at Fairview MB Church, St. Catharines, Ont., Dec. 18. Three Mennonite Brethren churches located within three kilometres of each other work together in youth ministry. This was their second collaborative choir service, the first being an Easter concert in 2011.

At Fairview’s annual Christmas service, the semi-regular choir swelled to 60 voices with the addition of singers from Grantham and Scott Street MB churches (which do not have ongoing choirs), and an eclectic orchestra including flute, guitar, and piano. An offering was taken for the local Youth for Christ.

“I enjoy seeing people come together, and get to know each other,” says Fairview choir director Marilyn Wiebe, one of the event’s envisioners. It creates “a sense of oneness,” says Fairview pastor Don Craw; “people walk away with the sense we should do this more often.”
