The ranks of fatherhood contain way too many deadbeat dads and wife-beaters, self-absorbed workaholics and perpetual adolescents. Or men who are simply absent from their children’s lives. Nowadays we are even apt to dismiss the earnest responsible types as nostalgic Ward Cleaver wannabes.
Just One More Day: Meditations for those who struggle with anxiety and depressionAuthor: Beverlee Buller KeckIn Just One More Day: Meditations for Those Who Struggle with Anxiety and Depression, Beverlee Buller Keck attempts to diffuse some of the trepidation that accompanies the topic of anxiety and depression. Her hope is that this book of 40 daily meditations, containing some principles and tools she relied on as she journeyed down the road to recovery, will help others as they have helped her.
The Council of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has taken another critical step toward reconciliation with Anabaptists. At its October meeting near Geneva, the council unanimously recommended that the LWF Eleventh Assembly adopt the statement, “Action on the Legacy of Lutheran Persecution of ‘Anabaptists’,” when it meets in Stuttgart, Germany, in July 2010.
It was gratifying to see more than 200 people register for the study conference in Saskatoon. The presence of a lot of young adults added a wonderful dimension to the event. Still, I dream of a deeper commitment in our body to the value of assembling to discern God’s direction. I’d love to see 400 attend the study conference!
A Mission with Passion: Glimpses into the life of a surgeonAuthor: Frank DuerskenFrank Duerksen is an orthopedic surgeon based in Winnipeg, world-renowned for his work with reconstructive surgery on people with leprosy. Now retired, he looks back over his life, offering us vignettes of his work as a surgeon in Paraguay, Brazil, Ethiopia, and Canada.
Colliding expectations, a sub-topic that nearly upstaged the main topic, and frustration over too little time to process it all characterized the MB study conference held Oct. 15-17 in Saskatoon.
