Courageous comes to select theatres; Gender gap decreases
This past spring, with our scones and cucumber sandwiches in hand, my two-year-old daughter and I sat down to watch Will and Kate’s royal wedding. It was the stuff of fairy tales – a young commoner marries her Prince Charming.
Much of the strife in the world cuts along religious lines,” says pastor Sara Jane Schmidt of River East MB Church (REMB), Winnipeg. “Why can’t we be a beacon modelling intercultural collaboration and hope that has a ripple effect?”
Even if it is at Jesus’ command, there are few places as miserable as being in a crowded boat during a storm. That is where the disciples would soon find themselves. The terror of a storm at sea is bad enough, but combine that terror with a tightly crowded mix of personalities struggling to stay afloat, and you have something you will give anything to escape.

Historical Attitudes That Have Shaped the Church’s use of the Arts
Historical Attitudes That Have Shaped the Church’s use of the ArtsAuthor: Matthew R.S. Todd Fifty years ago, Dorothy Sayers lamented, “The Church as a body has never made up her mind about the Arts…[and] has seldom made any consistent attempt to relate their aesthetic to the central Christian dogmas.” Strong words, and likely a fair critique. However, within the last 15 years we have witnessed a growing interest and new vitality around the relationship between Christian theology and the arts.
This issue of the Herald deals with endings. It’s easy to cheer when a new church plant is launched, or when a congregation reaches a milestone anniversary – 50, 75, 100 years!

Taking Your Soul to Work: Overcoming the Nine Deadly Sins of the Workplace
Taking Your Soul to Work: Overcoming the Nine Deadly Sins of the WorkplaceAuthors: R. Paul Stevens & Alvin Ung
As a busy layperson, I’ve struggled to integrate my Sunday faith with my Monday workplace. I know I should pack my faith along (like my lunch), but the pressures of work often cause me to forget. Ecclesiastes: Believers Church Bible CommentaryAuthor: Douglas B. MillerAt a certain MB church I once attended, a large plaque hung in the foyer, with the rather daunting welcome: “Guard your steps when you go to the house of God, to draw near to listen” (Ecclesiastes 5:2, RSV). That, and the occasional reading (always at a funeral) of the famous poem “For everything there is a season…” (3:1–11, RSV) make up almost the sum total of my encounters with Ecclesiastes in public church life. Rather ironic, given that the book’s name derives from the Greek word for church, ekklesia.
