During WWII, Vernon was a CO with Mennonite Central Committee, working in orphanages in England and France. He worked more than 30 years as a university professor of German and French. Vernon was active in church. His calling was cooking elegant meals. He and Rosella served Sunday dinner to hundreds of university students and elderly friends. Vernon enjoyed gardening, collecting antiques, and stitching needlepoint tapestries while listening to classical and opera music. After Rosella’s death, he moved to Tabor Court.
