After life under Communism became difficult, Mary’s family fled to Kiel, Germany, and immigrated to Canada in 1930. They settled on a farm in Crowfoot, Alta., but after two crop failures, moved to Coaldale in 1931. Mary committed her life to Jesus at 15, and this decision guided her throughout life. After completing Grade 6, Mary stayed home to help on the farm. She moved to Calgary in 1958 to attend nursing aide school. She began her career as an LPN in 1959 at Calgary General Hospital and retired in 1984. Due to Alzheimer’s disease and other health problems, Mary was admitted to Bethany Care Centre in 2008.
