Kaethe Toews died Oct. 24, 2010. She was born Dec. 31, 1934 in Fernheim, Paraguay to Gerhard and Katharina Friesen. They moved to Friesland, Paraguay, where they owned and operated a general store. When Kaethe was 6, her parents were murdered in the shop by robbers. Under gunfire, Kaethe and her brother Arthur fled to neighbours’. A year later, Franz and Susi Dueck adopted them, and they moved to Fernheim. Kaethe loved the Lord and accepted him as Saviour at an early age. She was baptized at 15. Kaethe had a business mind and worked as a secretary. Kaethe and Abram Toews were engaged in June 1953, immigrated to Canada in August, and married in Kitchener, Ont., Oct. 17, 1953. After 6 months, they moved to B.C. An evangelist at heart, Kaethe was passionate about spreading God’s love to everyone she met. Kaethe and Abe went on many short term mission trips to Mexico, Central America, Peru, and Paraguay. Kaethe loved to praise God with music, singing, playing piano − even learning bass guitar in her 50s. She led the Frauenverein (ladies’ fellowship) and prepared food for many large church events. Kaethe and Abe retired to a home on Hatzic Lake in Mission, B.C., in 1989. In 2009, she began to notice the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, and was admitted to Maplewood in 2010. She was a member at King Road MB Church, Abbotsford, B.C. Kaethe lived to serve others. Predeceased by grandchildren Jerel Lukas Fast, Jesse Toews; Kaethe is mourned by Abe; children Sieghard (Anni), Heidi (Carl) Knutson, Linda (Jake) Letkemann, Edward; 8 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 1 brother.
