Jakob Friesen died Sept. 14, 2011. He was born Dec. 9, 1924 in Neuenburg, Ukraine to Johann and Sara Friesen. In 1942, Jakob was separated from his family and sent to England as a prisoner of war. After his release, he settled in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. There Jakob married Helga Rein in 1951. He tried unsuccessfully to get the rest of his family out of Russia. He immigrated to Canada in 1967 with his daughter Regina. They were sponsored by his uncle and aunt Henry and Susie Lammert. Jakob worked many years for Hildebrand Iron Works as a welder and took great pride in his work. He returned to Germany several times to visit his mother and siblings who had immigrated there. Jakob was a faithful member of Scott Street MB Church, St. Catharines, Ont., regularly attending services and Bible studies until he suffered a stroke in 2002. His last years were at Versa Care Nursing Home. Jakob is mourned by daughter Regina; 1 grandson; 2 great-grandsons; 1 sister.
