Henry Schmidt died Feb. 8, 2011. He was born July 2, 1940 in Grande Prairie, Alta. to Peter and Margaret Schmidt. Henry was baptized in La Glace (Alta.) MB Church in 1958. His life was marked by a deep commitment to Christian service, love of family and friends, witty sense of humour, enthusiasm for hockey, and zeal for learning. Henry married Elvera Langemann Aug. 27, 1960. He earned a BTh from MBBC, a BA in psychology from Fresno Pacific College, an MDiv from MB Biblical Seminary, and a PhD in sociology from University of Southern California. He was a master at maximizing opportunities. Henry served the U.S. MB church as pastor, conference evangelist, and moderator, and leader of Church Mission Institute for cross-cultural missionaries. He loved taking his children along on work trips, camping all over North America and exploring Europe together. Henry became professor of evangelism and mission at MBBS in 1976 and president from 1993–2003. He taught innovative courses on cross-cultural experiences and service work in community agencies. He often invited international visitors, students, and the occasional hitchhiker for a meal or overnight stay. Henry will be remembered for his great heart for people, powerful vision for the church’s role in a changing world, commitment to mentoring students and church planters, and passion for the Lord. Henry was a member of North Fresno MB Church. His Alzheimer’s disease shifted retirement plans from doing further ministry to building relationships with family and praying for them. Elvera cared for him at home until his death. He calmly accepted a diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis in 2010, news which fast-tracked their move to Palm Village. Predeceased by 3 siblings, Henry is mourned by Elvera; daughters Debra (Martin) Brady, Laura (Mark) Roberts; James (Gaylene) Lee who became like a son; 5 grandchildren; 2 siblings; in-laws. The memorial was at Reedley (Cal.) MB Church.
