Bernie grew up on a farm near Blumenort, Man. He completed Grades 9, 10, and 12 at Mennonite Collegiate Institute, Gretna, Man., and Grade 11 at W.C. Miller Collegiate, Altona. In 1974, Bernie met his sweetheart Judy. Shortly before they married in 1977, Bernie rededicated his life and was baptized. Bernie and Judy moved to Killarney, Man., to farm with Bernie’s dad and brother Bill near Ninga, Man. After a short time farming, Bernie moved on to a career in truck driving. He enjoyed playing and watching sports, including baseball, golf, and curling. Bernie also loved woodworking and landscaping. His church community was an important part of his life. His love of music led to his involvement in the church choir. He was active in church council and Sunday school. Bernie’s greatest joy was spending time with this wife, children, and grandchildren.
