Woman in Mourning at Cemetery in Fall, with Black Umbrella

Woman in Mourning at Cemetery in Fall, with Black Umbrella

Ray Harris

two muddy, sodden, rain-filled tracks led in
to cemetery grounds green slick with rain;
fresh mounded mud-soil marked the new-dug plain,
revealed her earth-bound resting place within.

slip-slide, select the surest path. Begin
a new and ancient rite, an old refrain.
Commit, inter, infer she’s only lain
in Yarrow, narrow plot of earth. A fin –

and yet, not the end – we know.
Spirit, essence, inner core
endures disinterred to show
Soul-sail beyond this wet shore.

(Reflecting on a rainy day burial in Yarrow cemetery)
