What is Gospel?

We asked readers to send us their best visual interpretation of “gospel.” Here are the three honourable mentions.

Legacy-

“Legacy”

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God (2 Corinthians 4:4).

Faye Hall, a Winnipeg artist and member of North Kildonan MB Church, writes, “There is a spiritual battle going on we know nothing about. The Word of God may seem like it’s being cast aside, awash and diluted in the noise of our tumultuous lives. The mission of the believer is to quietly keep playing the sweet music of God’s love so it can be heard above the din.” She captured this message in acrylic on canvas.

Frail-and-Worn

“Frail and Worn”

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying…that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel (Ephesians 6:18,19).

Photographer Deb Goerzen of Elm Creek (Man.) MB Church writes that “the story of this photo was bittersweet. I was so blessed by the couple who stopped to pray for this young, hurting girl on the streets of Paris.” As Christians, part of our calling is to pray without ceasing – even in the middle of a busy street for a stranger.

Redemption

“Redemption”

[Grace] has now been revealed through the appearing of our Saviour, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel (2 Timothy 1:9–10).

Bev Ellis, who planted Emmaus Church in Surrey, B.C., with her husband Dave, is an accomplished painter. She created this piece in response to watching The Passion and “soaking in the verses about Christ’s sacrifice.” The work was “heavily influenced by Isaiah’s account of Christ,” and Bev says she was “transfixed by every detail; that he was not especially handsome, that he was so brutally wounded, he wasn’t even recognizable as a man.”
