Convention passes business and encourages forward motion

The U.S. MB conference met in Hillsboro, Kan., July 26–27 under the theme, “Transition Point: From a proud past to a promising future.” The timing of the convention coincided with the 100-year anniversary of Tabor College, the first MB institution of higher education in the United States.

Keynote speaker Dan Southerland, founder of Church Transitions Inc., which trains church leaders to manage major transitions, exhorted listeners to have the heartbeat of Jesus – “that none should perish” – in their churches. “If we follow Jesus, then we need to be here to seek and to save that which is lost.”

The U.S. conference unveiled a new mission statement (“We partner as one family to serve one Lord on one mission for the transformation of individuals, families and communities.”), and a new logo and website emphasizing oneness.

Conference busi-ness supported the theme of unity and evangelism. A nine percent budget increase was passed after executive director Ed Boschman encouraged local congregations to step up giving. Delegates affirmed new leaders for leadership board and Board of Faith and Life, and approved a memorandum of understanding regarding ownership issues of the MB Historical Commission, Kindred Productions, and MB Biblical Seminary caused by divestiture of the General Conference in 2002.

Finally, ministry reports were positive, with a focus on church planters from across the country sharing about their vision and work.
