Students reach into the past

Four groups of Grade 11 students from Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg converged upon the Centre for MB Studies  from June 1–4, to learn about the archives. The centre is about more than history, director Doug Heidebrecht told them; “we also engage in the life of the church” through consultation with pastors and teaching on theological issues. Archivist Conrad Stoesz explained the difference between an archive and a regular library – an archive houses one-of-a-kind materials, such as letters and personal diaries.

The students then worked in pairs to complete assignments ranging from discovering what kind of extracurricular activities students enjoyed at Winkler Bible Institute and MBBC from 1950–1970, to tabulating births recorded in midwife Sara Thielmann’s diary in 1910.

“I’m not going to lie; it was really boring going through those pages,” said one student who worked on the yearbook assignment, “but it was also really fun looking at the pictures.”
