Several U.S. studies reveal that social media platform Twitter reaches a limited audience. Pear Analytics monitored tweets every 30 minutes between 11:00 and 17:00 for a fortnight of weekdays, classifying them as news, spam, self-promotion, pointless babble, conversational, or pass-along value. Only 8.7 percent had pass-along value; 40.5 percent were classified as pointless babble while a further 37.5 percent were conversational. A Harvard study found that 10 percent of users generate 90 percent of the content, and Nielsen Online’s research suggests that many people give the service a try but rarely or never return.
