Partners join B.C. training day

A training day for ministry workers started under the auspices of the B.C. Mennonite Brethren conference in 2004 is now drawing pastors, administrators, and volunteers from a broad set of denominations. Held at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, B.C., this year, ChurchWorks added partners.

Already staged in cooperation with the National Association of Church Business Administrators, this year the conference formally partnered with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada, the Christian and Missionary Alliance (PAOC), and the “Four Cs” – the Canadian Council of Christian Charities.

However, the purpose of the day has not changed. BCMB director of administration Marilyn Hiebert told the 2011 session she hopes the training helps ministry workers to run support systems so smoothly there is no distraction from the gospel message. “We are all part of that process,” she said. “While we might not be out preaching, we are all ministering.”

Keynote speaker Ron Davis of PAOC said Paul wrote of God’s gift of seed to the sower, and urged that ministry workers be aware of future harvests. Instead of eating the seed along with the bread, Davis said, recognize the seeds God supplies. “Be a sower,” he said, “and in that way, your generosity multiplies to all the others.”

Diverse topics ranged from the legal, like Employment Standards, and Liability 101 for Church Leaders; to the encouraging, like Time Management, and Owning Your Policies.

About 175 workers attended this year’s event.
