Michael Scott Nikkel died Aug. 15, 2010. He was born Apr. 17, 1974 in Winkler, Man. to Larry and Laura Nikkel. He grew up on a farm in the Blumstein area and attended school in Winkler. As a boy, he accepted Jesus as Saviour at Winkler Bible Camp. In his teens, Mike developed pseudo-obstruction syndrome, a rare gastrointestinal condition, resulting in many hospital stays, some for months at a time. Mike was baptized into Winkler MB Church June 24, 1990. His faith was strengthened at Bethany Bible Institute, Hepburn, Sask. He attended University of Manitoba until November 1993, when a broken leg led to the detection of bone cancer. The subsequent radical amputation and 6 months of chemotherapy put his education on hold for a year and a half. Through determination, Mike earned a BEd with a double major in history and fine arts. He taught at W.C. Miller Collegiate, Altona, Man. After a few years, when full-time teaching became difficult, he began substituting in elementary grades. Predeceased by grandparents Henry E. Nikkel, Elizabeth Nikkel, Ben Hildebrand; Michael is mourned by parents Larry and Laura; brothers Tony (Char), Steve (Michele); grandma Susan Hildebrand; nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles; cousins.
