Dave came to faith in Christ as a child. As a teen, he experimented with drugs and rebelliousness. He recommitted himself to Christ in his late teens, and faith gave the rest of his life direction. In 1978, Dave met Beth, who encouraged him to pursue his interest in art and photography, which he studied at Sheridan College. Chronic headaches prevented him from pursuing a photography career; instead, he opened a small aquarium supply business. Dave served as president and newsletter editor of the St. Catharines Aquarium Club. He was a trustee at Mountview MB Church, Stoney Creek, Ont. Dave loved to work with wood, cars, and plants. He taught his daughters to appreciate reading, music, art, and nature, and modelled for them a life of faith. Though his chronic pain and later health problems presented many challenges, Dave held onto God as his strength.
