Just As I Am
Carol Peters
Whitewater Productions, 2008

Instrumental CDs can be hard to critique, as the musical range can be as broad as one’s personal taste. Carol Peters, an accomplished pianist, displays her love for both music and life in the CD Just As I Am, produced and engineered by Roy Salmond.

Peters partnered with a group of skilled musicians to provide arrangements filled with surprises and unique instrumentation. Both new and old choruses, together with time-tested hymns, are given a thorough facelift as the musicians add their personal groove and style.

Peters was raised as a missionary kid in the Congo with parents who loved music. Their encouragement and that environment shaped much of Peter’s style, which is evident in the CD. Peters says her motto has always been, “Why would I play the music as written when it could be greatly improved by altering the rhythm, harmony, or whatever I discern appropriate?”

So, if you are looking for a traditional-sounding CD of songs you know and love, perhaps this is not for you. If, on the other hand, you enjoy a variety of musical styles and are open to new ideas in a song you know well, you’ll enjoy this album. Peter’s passion is evident in each track. This is worship that will leave a smile on your face.
