Music Note: Beyond the Din

Don Baxter, Thomas C. Black, Jim Motherall, Darrell Peters, Bryan Rabie

Five participants in Mennonite Central Committee’s prison visitation program recorded this CD of original music. All five musicians have been, or are still, incarcerated in Manitoba correctional institutions. Their compositions include songs of hope and inspiration, piano pieces, and folk music. With rhetoric about getting tough on crime abounding, the CD helps get “beyond the din to hear what the guys are saying in their songs,” says Murray Barkman, coordinator of Open Circle. “My music is part of my therapy, part of my healing,” says Jim Motherall, one of the musicians, who has spent 32 years in prison. All proceeds from the CD’s sale will support Open Circle. The album is available through MCC Manitoba and select local music stores.
