MB Biblical Seminary rededicated The Warkentin Memorial Prayer Chapel, Sept. 11, 2009. Located between Fresno Pacific University and MB Biblical Seminary, the chapel was originally built and dedicated in 1966 by the parents of Herman Harms Warkentin, a missionary (1946–1953) killed in an accident in India.

The chapel has served as a place for prayer and meditation for students from the seminary, university, and local community for more than 40 years.

Time took its toll on the prayer chapel, leaving the structure worn and in need of repair and upgrade. The Warkentin family, along with supporters from the seminary community and the valley, stepped in to make it possible for the special chapel to be around for the next generation.

A new roof, doors, windows, carpet, and tile were installed, along with a new cross. The pews were rearranged to offer greater flexibility for individual and group prayer. Encroaching shrubs and trees were removed to allow the chapel to be seen within the unique setting of its surrounding redwood grove.

Officials unveiled the newly refurbished prayer chapel during a ceremony on the MBBS campus. Speakers included seminary president Lynn Jost, Fresno Pacific University president Merrill Ewert, and several Warkentin family members.

A new plaque unveiled outside rededicates the chapel to both Herman and Beatrice Warkentin. It calls users to “examine our own commitment to the gospel” and “to consider what comforts and relationships we would be willing to sacrifice” to tell others about Jesus. Inside, a multi-panelled plaque tells Herman and Beatrice’s story of following God’s call to India.
