MEI students got talent and generosity

It’s not every day Science class inspires a concert, but that’s exactly what Ron Peters’ Grade 8s at Mennonite Educational Institute Middle School, Abbotsford, B.C., did to raise money for Mennonite Central Committee’s Pakistan flooding relief. As part of studies on water cycles, Peters discussed the situation in Pakistan and challenged students to respond to the needs.

Becca Carsience, who’d previously organized a talent show at her home church (Northview Community), arranged an “MEI’s Got Talent” show at the school for $10 admission. “We had a bake sale to show cooking talents, an art auction  to show artistic talents, and a jelly bean count ($1 to guess) just because it’s fun!” she said. The students also took an offering halfway through the performances.

In total, the event raised $1567.23 for MCC to provide relief kits, shelter, food, and medical care for those who have been affected by the flooding. Pictured above, Carsience, Hannah Kornelson, and Kimberly Reddicopp present a cheque to MCC BC executive director Wayne Bremner.

“[The students] challenge me to think and act more generously to the needs I see around me,” said Peters.
