Kernlieder
Sister Dorothy
Overground Records, 2007.

With help from her grandmother, eclectic performer Sister Dorothy (of the Mennonite, not Catholic variety) sings 17 songs from Gesangbuch, a German hymnal published in 1952 with works by Martin Luther, Beethoven, and Zinzendorf. Kernlieder, or “core songs,” were once at the heart of Mennonite church singing and sustained them through their suffering in Russia. German may not be your first language, but you’ll still be moved by these soothing hymns arranged for solo guitar, flute, and voice. www.sisterdorothy.com
