Conference ranks high on Christian workplace survey

The Canadian conference executive board meetings, held January 30–31, in Abbotsford, B.C., for reporting, discussion, and decision-making were also a time for celebration. Executive director David Wiebe reported that the Canadian Conference of MB Churches (CCMBC) scored higher than average on a staff survey conducted by the Best Christian Workplaces Institute in fall 2008 and will qualify for an award. Wiebe also said Christianity Today International will soon post a CCMBC photo and corporate identification online (www.christianitytoday.com).

The executive board also rejoiced in several of the conference’s recent major achievements, notably the success of Eagle’s Flight training programs. These are workshops offered to church boards to improve clarity, listening, and decision-making processes, led by conference-certified stewardship representatives.

Revisions to the strategic plan, which includes a three-year financial plan to fund Regenerate 21-01, were also presented to the board. The Regenerate 21-01 reserve allocation, approved by delegates at Gathering 2008, will remain at $1.6 million over a five-year period. The executive board approved the 2009-2010 budget. It also expects to approve the revised strategic plan at its next meeting in April.

Discussions at the meeting also revolved around Horizon Quebec and ReFocusing. A team of four leaders, including Stéphane Rhéaume offering services in French, is now positioned across Canada to facilitate ReFocusing under the leadership of Dave Jackson.

Regenerate 21-01 director Ewald Unruh reported an item of concern. “Churches ask for ReFocusing when they are in trouble, such as conflict or deteriorating membership,” he said. “We’d like them to engage before that point.”
The board is developing a measurement plan to listen more closely to churches receiving Regenerate 21-01 services. It will contain measures to evaluate feedback from churches engaging the services, and to facilitate reporting and accountability for the conference.

The meeting included a review of collaboration arrangements between CCMBC and each of the provincial conferences. Several provincial leaders recommended further revisions to the current agreements, a task Wiebe will be taking on.
