On July 14, Byron Peters began a 6-day, 960-km cycling journey from La Crete to Red Deer, Alta. His goal is to raise $50,000 for HIV/AIDS prevention work overseas and help with Alberta flood relief.
Peters is cycling with friends Simon Wiebe and Calvin Elias. Seventy percent of all funds raised go Mennonite Central Committee (MCC)’s Generations program, a program that combats HIV/AIDS overseas through education and support for those it affects. They hope their trip will raise funds as well as awareness that AIDS is still a life-ending illness for many.
After the devastation of the Alberta floods, the group decided their trip would also be a good way to help flood victims. Thirty percent of funds raised will go to Mennonite Disaster Services (MDS), a group helping with clean up and long-term flood rebuilding.
“I am blessed that I am healthy enough to take up this challenge of cycling,” says Peters. “I want to use it to bring awareness about people in need.”
