Lendrum MB Church, Edmonton, celebrated 50 years with open-mic sessions, photo displays, a banquet, a memorial service for deceased members, and a celebration service with homilies by former pastors June 29–July 1, 2012. A metal sculpture, “God with Us in Diversity and Unity”; a banner, “Make a Joyful Noise”; and 2 publications (a cookbook and Jubilee: Lendrum Mennonite Brethren Church Celebrates 50 Years) marked the occasion. Originally a fellowship group meeting in the home of Peter and Anne Bergen in 1956, and then called the Gospel Light Mission led by Bernard Sawatsky in 1957, Lendrum was officially accepted into the Alberta MB Conference with 49 members and Peter Rempel as pastor Nov. 4, 1962. Lendrum helped plant River West Christian Church and Sunrise Community Church, and supported four other churches including Edmonton’s Chinese and Vietnamese Mennonite churches. (Members from Lendrum also established Edmonton Christian Fellowship.) Currently, Justin Majeau is pastor of the congregation with 195 members.

Sept. 30, 2012, River East MB Church, Winnipeg, launched a period of 50th anniversary celebrations, which will include a January banquet and June homecoming. Founded as a daughter congregation of North Kildonan MB on Jan. 6, 1963, by J.H. Quiring and Victor Adrian, River East currently has 225 members and a pastoral team led by Mary Anne Isaak. To mark the anniversary, a story arc on the website (remb.ca, updated regularly) highlights anecdotes from the church’s history. Congregation members also contributed artwork to a Christian Seasons Calendar for 2012/2013. River East MB identifies the congregation’s 3 callings as practising spiritual formation, being agents of reconciliation, and creating open space for honest encounter with God in worship.
