Enrollment shows increase

Columbia Bible College, Abbotsford, B.C., welcomed 522 students this September – slightly up from the fall 2008 student body number. Significant increases were seen in new enrollments (16 percent). Degree program enrollment was steady while diploma and certificate programs increased 33 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Another enrollment surge was expected for October and November as seminar courses begin.

“We are very encouraged this fall term,” says Melanie Olfert, director of enrollment management and marketing.

Showing particular strength are the biblical studies and caregiving/counselling programs, with exceptionally high new student enrollment in youth work. The Quest adventure discipleship program had waiting lists for the third time in four years. The newest course offering, Introduction to Business, started with a full roster.

In addition, CBC is partnering with Trinity Western University and ACTS Seminaries. Graduate counselling interns from the seminaries will be available at reduced costs to CBC students. Fourth-year caregiving and counselling majors from CBC will gain internship experience from functioning as peer advisors. Carol Molcar will provide supervisory oversight on a part-time basis. Molcar has a PhD in clinic psychology from Seattle Pacific University, more than 25 years of professional counselling experience, and has served on staff at CBC for three years.

Professor Carey Penner also returns this year to his post as director of caregiving and counselling, after a three-year leave for doctoral studies.
