Birthday baptisms “a gift from God”

For the celebration of his 90th birthday, Corny Braun’s family gathered in Coaldale, Alta., June 9, and put him to work: the retired pastor and Bible school instructor gave a short sermon about the unusual baptism of the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:26–39), and baptized five family members.

The event came about after teenaged grandchildren Alysa and Tyler Klassen, who were coming up to the event from Arizona, requested their grandfather baptize them on confession of their faith. He made arrangements with Coaldale MB Church to use the baptistry and invited church members to attend the celebratory event as well. When news spread through the family, granddaughter Deenna (Braun) Nelson, son-in-law Michael Holmes, and son Roy also requested baptism.

“After so many years of praying, it was a very special gift from God” to baptize these family members, said Braun. With the Klassens’ paternal grandparents, “we have prayed together by telephone every week for over 10 years.”

Braun was president at Bethany College, Hepburn, Sask., (1968–1976, 1977–1979), pastor at MB churches in Port Rowan, Ont., (1979–1990) and Grassy Lake, Alta., (1991–1994).
