Gifts and challenges

Bethany College,  Hepburn, Sask., saw an overall decrease in enrollment in the current school year with 108 full-time equivalent students enrolled for the fall semester. The previous year, 129 were enrolled.

The largest class is the first year class, with 48 students. Twenty-seven students are in their second year, 18 in their third, 15 in their fourth. The male/female breakdown is nearly even: 55 male, 53 female students.

Another challenge facing Bethany College this fall is the presidential search. However, the Bethany community is “enjoying the challenges and gifts God has given us for this year,” says Joy Nokinsky, director of advancement. “God has blessed us with a smaller student body, but he has brought students who have a great fervour to serve.”

Modular courses benefit students and leaders

For one week during the fall semester, Bethany College breaks from the regular class schedule to offer modular courses taught by guest instructors.

This year, MB Biblical Seminary professors Doug Berg (Langley campus) and Tim Geddert (Fresno campus), MBMS International missionary Trever Godard, and University of Lethbridge professor of sociology James Penner taught modules on leadership, parables, world missions, and youth culture.

The modular classes are three-credit-hour courses condensed to one week of classroom attendance, with the remainder of course reading and assignments completed over the rest of the semester. These courses offer an alternative to regular classes for pastors, church leaders, or anyone with a desire for lifelong learning. Two of the four classes may be taken for seminary credit.

Penner, a Bethany alumnus and parent of two current students, said “as an educator, I have absolutely loved the opportunity to discuss with a class full of amazing young adults….as a parent, I can’t think of a better place for my amazing kids to discover and develop who God made them to be.”
