Altar Songs

Altar Songs is a solo project by Jason Topnik, a Winnipeg songwriter and member at Crossroads MB Church. The album offers a collection of music that speaks with honesty and conviction of one who is on a spiritual journey. Many songs are simple confessions of one’s need for God. Themes of discipleship like waiting in hope, obedient surrender, and receiving mercy are evident throughout Topnik’s writing.

The album offers a good balance between songs that are reflective (“One,” “I’ll Wait on You”) and those that are upbeat (“In My Dreams,” “You, Oh Lord”). The music is rooted in an acoustic guitar sound. Musical accents provided by violin and mandolin on several tracks add to the folk tone of the project.

While the project has a raw energy, it is also a bit rough around the edges, especially in the vocal balances and blends.
Overall, the album is a thoughtful work, simple in its approach, and communicates that Topnik is a man with a genuine love for his Saviour.

Altar Songs is available through Kindred Productions (www.kindredproductions.com).
