It’s the Pumpkin Fling!
On Oct. 25, River East Mennonite Brethren Church partnered with Jubilee Mennonite Church, Douglas Mennonite Church, and Kilcona Park Alliance Church to host this event that saw more than 80 teens participate. They spray painted a graffiti wall, played basketball, talked around a camp fire, and dropped pumpkins from a crane.
In addition to the teens’ activities, children and parents from the local community had their faces painted, decorated pumpkins, and participated in the rest of the night’s events.
After all the events outside, the teens entered the warmth of the church where local Christian band Sempiternal led them in worship, and Dave Lunn (pastor for youth and young adults at River East) shared the gospel. Shattering a mirror, Lunn talked with the teens about being made to reflect God’s image, and explained though humans are broken by sin, through Jesus, God wants to put back together the shattered pieces.

After the event, the smashed pumpkins were scooped up to be used as compost in the community garden at Jubilee Mennonite. The leftover intact pumpkin were used by Jubilee Mennonite’s community kitchen to make pumpkin toast.
Jubilee community pastor Anna Marie Geddert and fellow coordinators Nathan Koslowsky and Ted Geddert led a tremendous team of volunteers. Several local businesses and organizations donated of their resources to make the event possible.
