Do you ever think God is disappointed in you? If so, you need to read Will Davis Jr.’s 10 Things Jesus Never Said: And Why You Should Stop Believing Them.

Will Davis Jr., author of the Pray Big series, seeks to ease the burden of Christ-followers by addressing common myths about God’s grace. In an accessible style, he exposes “lies” which many Christians – even if only at times – wrongly believe.

Each “lie” cheapens God’s grace and increases the discouragement of the Christian life. Davis addresses wrong beliefs such as: “You are too far gone to be saved,” “I am so disappointed in you,” “If you were a better Christian this would not be happening to you,” “You missed God’s will for your life,” “This is a cross you must bear,” “You don’t have to forgive those who hurt you deeply,” and so on.

As I started reading Davis’ book, my mind objected to the frequent clichés such as “God doesn’t see the sins, he sees the sinner,” or “Jesus is the Saviour who doesn’t chase away sinners, but chases after them.” But when I shared these phrases with others they appreciated them greatly. And the more I read the book, the more I was able to overlook the clichés, and the more encouraged I was.

I believe Davis succeeds at exposing most of the commonly held misconceptions about how our God feels about his children. Through frequent Scripture references and personal illustrations, Davis clearly paints a picture of the endless grace and unconditional love of our great God.

If you suspect you may be a legalist who needs to relax and enjoy Jesus a bit more, you will be blessed by this book. If you have things in your past that shame you for which you’re trying hard to make up, you will find acceptance and rest as you read this book.

Each chapter deals with its subject well, but the “You can’t lose your salvation” chapter is particularly well argued from Scripture. I was also glad to see a chapter which deals with God’s view of divorced people. Each chapter also contains a list of discussion questions, hence the book can be easily adapted for discussion in a small group, youth group, or a book club setting.
